2018 was a year to remember for KM Media. Our first full feature documentary “Congo — A Political Tragedy” premiered at FIFP in Cannes in late April and that was just the beginning of an amazing adventure full of surprises and excitement. I cannot believe how quickly the past year has flown by. Just over a year ago, I had no intentions of sharing this documentary with the world, let alone submitting it to festivals.
If someone told me that in the 8 months following its world premiere, Political Tragedy would feature in 8 festivals and be included in La Maison du doc, le Club du doc in Lussas France, the African Cinema Café series, Africa in a classroom in San Jose California, that it would be co-presented by TV5 at the Montreal Black Film Festival, I would have laughed in your face. This year was truly an amazing and humbling experience from start to finish.
The highlight of 2018 was undoubtedly the world premiere at Cannes’ FIFP in April. That first experience was a testament of how much people cared to learn about the history of the Congo and also gave us the motivation to continue the job that Lumumba asked of the future generations in his last letter to Maman Pauline. Following FIFP, Political Tragedy went on to have a series of successful screenings at festivals internationally, appearing in Haiti, DocLahoma, Lussas, San Jose, Montreal and Switzerland.
All in all, we’re feeling pretty great about what we’ve accomplished in the past year. We would not have been able to accomplish any of this without the amazing support that we continue to receive from all of you! For everyone who made it out to one of our screenings this past year, we want to thank you for making these events so hugely successful and are very grateful for all of the support.
